Description

A comforting classic Apple Pie that combines crisp-tender apples and a golden, buttery crust, perfect for every occasion.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and place the rack in the lower third of the oven.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in water until dough forms.
  3. Divide dough in half, shape into balls, and flatten into discs. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
  4. Roll out one disc and fit into a pie pan.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples.
  6. Pour the apple mixture into the crust. Roll out the second disc and place over the filling. Seal and flute edges, then cut slits in the top crust.
  7. Brush the crust with beaten egg.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes until apples are tender and crust is golden.
  9. Cool before serving.

Notes

To enhance flavor, use a mix of tart and sweet apples. Letting the pie rest after baking helps the juices to set.
