Description

These homemade cinnamon rolls are soft, sweet, and perfect for family gatherings, complete with a melt-in-your-mouth icing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (one packet)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened for filling
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons milk (for icing)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by warming the milk to wrist temperature and stirring in the yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter, remaining sugar, salt, and eggs. Add the yeast mixture and half of the flour, mixing to combine. Gradually add more flour until the dough pulls away from the sides.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  5. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until spreadable.
  6. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 16 by 12 inches. Spread the filling over the dough, leaving a border to seal. Roll into a tight log.
  7. Slice the log into 12 even rolls and arrange them in a greased pan. Cover and let rise until puffy, about 30–45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Make the icing by whisking powdered sugar, vanilla, a pinch of salt, and milk to desired consistency.
  10. Spread icing over warm rolls just before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or refrigerate for up to four days. Can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
